Tomb of Nebamun
The deceased is seen on this second partial mural from Nebamun's tomb, standing in a boat on the Nile River, flushing birds from a papyrus marsh. According to the Egyptian inscription beneath his left arm, Nebamun is having fun in his endless afterlife. In contrast to Ti's motionless stance as he watches others hunt hippopotami, Nebamun rushes forward and swings his throwing stick fiercely. He has three birds in his right hand that he has caught. His hunting cat, positioned improbably on a papyrus stem directly in front of and below him, has captured two more in its claws and is clutching the wings of a third. Nebamun's wife and daughter follow him on the hunt, holding the lotuses (Egyptian emblems of rebirth) that they had collected. The artist, like Old Kingdom artists, scaled down the figures in accordance to their position. The painter, like Ti, painted the creatures naturalistically, based on thorough study.
