Innermost Coffin of Tutankhamen
Archeologists discovered the pharaoh's encased body as the most important artifact in Tutankhamen's tomb. The royal mummy lay in the middle of three coffins, one within the other. The most elegant coffin is the one on the inside. It is an ultimate testament of the sculptor's and goldsmith's talents, made of beaten gold (nearly a quarter ton of it) and inlaid with semiprecious stones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and carnelian. The portrait mask that covered the king's face is similarly crafted of gold and has semiprecious stones inlay. The overall impact of the mask and tomb contents is one of grandeur and luxury, expressing Egyptian authority, pride, and unlimited wealth.
